Do These Three Things Before Your Dental Implant Procedure

Posted on

If you're missing a tooth, you may have difficulties chewing, and you may be self-conscious about your smile. Fortunately, dental implants allow your dentist to restore missing teeth using a prosthesis attached to a metal implant and abutment. Your dentist will guide you through the process, but here are some things you might not be aware of. If you want to have an implant placed, here are three things you'll want to do.

1. Let your dentist know about your medical history.

You will have a consultation appointment with your dentist before moving forward with the surgery. At this appointment, your dentist will discuss the procedure with you in depth. They will examine your teeth to make sure you're a good candidate for dental implants. They will also want to discuss your overall health. While dental implant surgery isn't a major procedure, it is still surgery, and your dentist will want to ensure you're healthy enough for the operation. Tell your dentist if there's anything they should know before scheduling you for the procedure. Make sure you provide an accurate list of the medications you're taking and any health conditions that may affect the outcome of the procedure, such as asthma.

2. Ask for anxiolytic drugs, if necessary.

Being nervous during your dental implant procedure can make your experience significantly less pleasant. Your dentist will numb your gums and jaw before beginning to place your implant, but people with dental phobias might be particularly nervous. If you know you have a fear of the dentist or of this procedure in particular, you can ask your dentist what they offer for anxiety treatment. Many dentists offer remedies from laughing gas to oral anxiety-reducing drugs. Some drugs, such as oral tablets, will need to be taken before your appointment. Make sure you ask your dentist about your options ahead of time so you can plan accordingly.

3. Clear your schedule.

The actual dental implant procedure can usually be completed within an hour or two. However, this is oral surgery. You may be sore after the anesthesia wears off, and you will probably want to go home and take some painkillers to make yourself more comfortable. It's a good idea to clear your schedule for the rest of the day when you intend to get your implant. Taking it easy and resting will allow your body to get started on the healing process right away.
